... was an anarchist and former steel worker, born in Detroit of Polish immigrant parents. He shot McKinley at close range while he was "meeting and greeting" members of the public at the Pan–American Exposition of 1901, for which the Temple of Music had been built.
While being prepared for his execution, in October 1901 (less than two months after the assassination), Czolgosz is reported to have said "I killed the President because he was the enemy of the good people – the good working people. I am not sorry for my crime."
